TULIPS Mentee Shanya Espy is a recent graduate of Legacy High School home of the Longhorns. Shanya is a member of the NAACP, former Chair President of the CCSD School Board Advisory Council, and President of the National Honor Society and of the Black Student Union at Legacy High School, Vice President of Batteries Included for the City of Las Vegas and recent winner of the Mayor’s Award presented to her by Mayor Carolyn Goodman. Shanya plans to attend Grambling University and major in Strategic, Legal and Management Communications. She would like to one day be a Communications Director for the FBI. Because: she wants to incorporate her interests of public speaking and Federal Law. For her community service, this year Shanya volunteered for the Metropolitan Police Department. There she participated as an explorer and was with the program for one year. She enjoyed this experience because it gave her a new outlook on law enforcement and through this; she has discovered the passion she has for her community. Shanya’s hobbies include playing Flag Football, Reading, and Public Speaking, working for the Youth Development and Social Innovation Department at City of Las Vegas City Hall and being a mentor to those who aspire to walk in her footsteps. Her favorite quote is “Be thankful for those who are awaiting your failure for they are your biggest motivation” This quote is by – Shanya Espy When asked about the TULIPS Mentor Programs, Shanya Espy said, joining the TULIPS program is one of the best decisions she has made thus far in her life because it has taught her sisterhood, social respect and has exposed her to successful Black women in the community that she can look up to and aspire to be. Her most memorable moment was when we held our “Black Girls Rock” viewing party. During this event, the mentees participated in dialogue around growing up Black in America and designed tee shirts with words that represented themselves in their authentic styles. At this moment, she expresses how motivated to see such influential women who have overcome all odds and continue to make a difference. Shanya would like to thank her mentor Ms. Kasina Douglass-Boone! She has made this experience for Shanya the absolute best and she could not have asked for a more inspirational mentor such as Mrs. Douglass-Boone.
